For Art's
Sake was founded in 1994 by Debbe
Heller-Lewkowicz, an art teacher at P.S.
87 for 12 years. I will meet your child/children at
P.S. 87 and deliver him/her to a spacious, well lit studio a few
blocks away for an afternoon of art, art history, crafts,
and fun. There we will relax and snack for ten
minutes, while children from other schools, public and private, join
us for the afternoon. Each class has about ten to twelve
students of a similar age.
When we are ready to work, I
will teach a lesson using demonstrations and art history to define
and explore a specific skill. Whether learning to draw or
paint, sculpt or print, we will use a wide range of
materials such as charcoal, pastels, acrylics, oil,
watercolor, clay, and sculpy.
My afterschool program will
also teach high end crafts such as glass painting, beadmaking,
stampmaking, papermaking, mosaics, stained glass windows, soap
and candlemaking.
Twice a year we
will participate in an art show at a neighborhood art
gallery. We will work together to create
exceptional art for an evening of festivities where we will share
our work with parents, friends and relatives.
Once a month my students join
me for a weekend afternoon, exploring
a major art museum in New York City. We look at
paintings and sculptures and try to understand how to look at
art and talk about what we see. I teach the children
about specific artists and movements, offering background and
interesting information, while encouraging the children to
express their own thoughts about what they are seeing. We
end our visit by creating our own artwork inspired
by these great artists. Your children will learn to love their
time in the museum and begin to identify themselves as artists,
linked to the great art of the centuries.
Older children
can work to build a portfolio for entrance to the specialized art
schools for high school students. Many of my students
have gained valuable experience that has earned them spots at La
Guardia High School of Art, Art and Design, and other art programs in
NYC. I will prepare them for all aspects of the specialized
art school entrance exam, including drawing from a live model,
learning how to talk about their artwork, and matting and framing
their portfolio for presentation.
You may also have
an arts and crafts birthday party in my studio or your own
home. Choose from a wide variety of projects
including jewelry and beadmaking, glass painting, beadie babies,
sculpy projects, jewelry and treasure boxes, tie-dye tee shirts,
stamped stationery, soap and candlemaking. Each party can be chosen
to meet your budget needs.
Join us for our
weekend jewelry and bead making classes. Kids
can come alone, or with their moms, to learn beadmaking. While
kids will learn a variety of techniques to create necklaces,
chokers, earrings and bracelets...moms will make jewelry
using freshwater pearls, precious and semi-precious stones, bali
silver and unique findings. Learn the techniques of
charm making, knotting for floating beads, and making chandelier
earrings. This is not just stringing beads.
Anyone can do that without a class. Come and see what
makes this class special. Moms, don't just watch
your kids having fun...come and have fun together!
